UK Health chiefs are saying children should be given flu vaccinations to protect their grandparents at Christmas.
The NHS issued the warning after at least six hospital declared a “critical incident” amid record super-flu cases.
Caroline Temmink, the NHS director of vaccinations warned: “As families gear up for festive celebrations together, it’s now or never to get protected against flu in time for Christmas,”
She added “children are super-spreaders and with flu infections rising fast in younger age groups, getting kids vaccinated is one of the best ways to prevent serious illness, especially for grandparents and loved ones who are vulnerable.”
The warnings are eerily reminiscent of those issued during the so called covid pandemic when the flu just vanished.
As the same health chiefs advise the wearing of face masks, one has to wonder if they will try lock-downs and social distancing next.
The Mirror reports: A new strain of seasonal influenza A, H3N2 “subclade K”, is driving an unusually early and severe flu season. Hospital admissions have skyrocketed as people have less built-up immunity against the mutant strain. NHS data released last week showed an average of 1,717 hospital beds occupied by flu patients, including 69 in critical care – 56 per cent higher than the same point in 2024 and ten times higher than in 2023.
The NHS revealed yesterday that flu hospitalisations in London are three times higher than at the same time last year, with an average of 259 patients occupying hospital beds daily since November 24. The health service urged eligible Londoners to get their jab “as a matter of urgency” to “protect themselves against the virus and ease the pressure on NHS staff this winter”.
