French President Macron has already recognized Palestine but says it must fully recognize Israel and agree to demilitarization
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has told the daily La Repubblica that recognizing Palestine would be “counterproductive.” French President Emmanuel Macron, meanwhile, announced that Paris would recognize the state of Palestine, the first G7 member to do so.
“I’ve said this many times, including in parliament. I’ve said it to the Palestinian authorities and also to Macron: I believe that recognizing the state of Palestine when it doesn’t exist could be downright counterproductive,” Meloni noted, as cited by wPolityce.
“If something that does not exist is acknowledged in writing, there is a risk that the problem will appear resolved when it is not,” she explained. Meloni further clarified that she supports a Palestinian state, but does not support its recognition “before the process of its creation.”
Yesterday, Italian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani stated that the recognition of the Palestinian state must occur simultaneously with the Palestinian recognition of Israel.
“A Palestinian state that does not recognize Israel means that the problem has not been solved,” he said.
French President Macron went even further, stating that a Palestinian state should fully recognize Israel and agree to demilitarization.
Following Macron’s declaration, the center-left Italian opposition, including the Democratic Party, appealed to Meloni to make a similar decision, writes wPolityce.
In her video message sent to the “Europa Viva 25” congress of the Spanish right-wing Vox party, Meloni also noted the right for Palestine to be its own nation. “I am thinking, of course, of Gaza and the need to arrive there too at a cessation of attacks, the liberation of all hostages still in the hands of Hamas, and the construction of a peace that recognizes the right of the Palestinians to have a state of their own and of Israel to live securely without the threat of terrorism,” she said.
