In India’s Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot, a distinct population known as the Western Ghats king cobra (Ophiophagus kaalinga) is classified as Vulnerable.
Researchers compiled 22 years of rescue records (2002–2024) and verified sightings across Goa, identifying 47 confirmed locations of these snakes. Five of those records occurred along busy railway corridors.
