A stunning new discovery in Ethiopia's Afar region—a 2.6-million-year-old partial lower jaw—has filled a major gap in the human evolutionary story. This fossil, the first Paranthropus ever found in the Afar, proves these robust hominins roamed over 1,000 km farther north than previously known, challenging old ideas about their range, diet, and adaptability. In a discovery that's sending ripples through paleoanthropology, researchers led by Professor Zeresenay Alemseged from the University of Chicago have uncovered the oldest known Paranthropus specimen in northern Ethiopia's Afar region. Labeled MLP-3000, this partial lower jaw—complete with preserved tooth roots and part of a molar crown—dates to between 2.9 and 2.5 million years ago.
Until now, Paranthropus fossils were known only from southern Ethiopia southward to South Africa. Their absence from the fossil-rich Afar—home to iconic finds like "Lucy" (Australopithecus afarensis) and early Homo—had long puzzled scientists. Many assumed the genus never reached that far north, perhaps limited by specialized diet or outcompeted by more flexible lineages.

But this new jaw changes everything. "Neither was the case: Paranthropus was as widespread and versatile as Homo," explains Professor Alemseged. The absence was simply a quirk of the fossil record.
A Mosaic of Ancient and Robust Traits
The specimen shows classic Paranthropus features: an exceptionally thick jaw bone and massive postcanine teeth suited for grinding tough foods. Yet it also retains more primitive traits seen in earlier hominins, leading the team to classify it conservatively as Paranthropus sp.
Equally important is the context. Found in the Mille-Logya area, the fossil comes from a transitional period when eastern Africa's climate was shifting toward open grasslands. Associated animal remains suggest Paranthropus thrived in varied habitats—not locked into a narrow ecological niche as once believed.

High Diversity at the Dawn of Our Genus
The Afar during the Late Pliocene was a bustling crossroads of hominin evolution. Early Homo and Australopithecus fossils of similar age are known nearby, meaning multiple lineages—including robust Paranthropus—coexisted and likely competed directly.
