AFP reports: American director Rob Reiner and his wife were found dead at their southern California mansion, US media reported on Sunday, as the Los Angeles mayor said she was “heartbroken” by their loss.

Two people were found dead at the home of “When Harry Met Sally” and “Princess Bride” director Reiner, local broadcaster NBCLA and other media outlets reported.

NBC media later cited a source close to the family, saying that the couple had been found dead of what appeared to be stab wounds.

Broadcaster CNN reported that a spokesperson for the family had confirmed Reiner and his wife had died.

Los Angeles police did not confirm the identity of the deceased but did say detectives were investigating a death.

“No one has been detained. No one is being interviewed as a suspect,” said LAPD deputy chief Alan Hamilton.

“I’m not going to confirm whether someone’s being interviewed at this time or not. We’re going to try to speak to every family member that we can to get to the facts of this investigation,” he added.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also said that the investigation was ongoing.

“I am heartbroken by the tragic loss of Rob and his wife Michele. I knew Rob and have tremendous respect for him,” she said.

“An acclaimed actor, director, producer, writer, and engaged political activist, he always used his gifts in service of others,” she added.

The Los Angeles Fire Department told NBC a man and a woman, approximately 78 and 68 years old, were found deceased inside the home.

Neighbors confirmed property records that indicate Reiner and his wife live in the home in the upscale Brentwood neighborhood, NBC reported.

Reiner rose to acting fame as the oafish son-in-law Michael “Meathead” Stivic on groundbreaking 1970s sitcom “All in the Family,” before transitioning to directing with rock mockumentary “This is Spinal Tap” in 1984.

Reiner directed the 1989 romantic comedy “When Harry Met Sally,” starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan.
