Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov shocked the international community by revealing that on the night of December 28-29, 2025, the "Kiev regime" carried out what he described as a terrorist attack using 91 long-range strike unmanned aerial vehicles targeting the president's state residence in the Novgorod Region.
According to Lavrov, Russian air defenses successfully intercepted and destroyed all 91 UAVs, with no casualties or material damage reported. Despite Moscow's continued participation in the US-mediated peace process, the minister issued a stark warning: “Russia’s negotiating position will be revised” due to these reckless actions.
“Targets for retaliatory strikes and the time for their implementation by the Russian Armed Forces have been determined,” Lavrov declared, adding that any hopes for a soft response should be abandoned.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova went even further, telling Russian media that the response “will not be diplomatic”. She called the alleged attack unprecedented, especially since it reportedly occurred during active negotiations in the United States: “At the very moment when plans are being discussed, this bloody, rabid, terrorist scum is undermining peace efforts.”
Kremlin foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov revealed that during a Monday phone call, US President Donald Trump expressed shock and outrage, stating he “could not have imagined such crazy actions on the part of Kiev.”
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskyy has categorically denied any involvement, accusing Moscow of inventing the incident as a pretext to derail progress in US-Ukraine talks and justify future strikes on Kyiv's government quarter.
The incident has dramatically raised tensions just as hopes for a diplomatic breakthrough appeared to be emerging. Moscow insists the response will be severe and non-diplomatic — the world watches anxiously for the next move.
