Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Friday said that the coming weeks will be key for a controversial US proposal to stop the nearly four-year war in Ukraine.

AFP reports: The US 28-point plan, backed by President Donald Trump, calls for major concessions by Kyiv, including giving up a swathe of eastern territory to Russia and slashing its military, and appears to meet many of the Kremlin’s demands following its 2022 invasion of its neighbour.
“This peace plan includes propositions on which the Russians and the Americans have already held preliminary discussions,” Orban said in a radio interview.
“I think we’re at a decisive moment, the next two or three weeks will be crucial.”
The nationalist prime minister has maintained close ties with Moscow, often bucking the rest of the EU on pressuring Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, and rekindled relations with Washington following Trump’s return to office.
Budapest had been tapped last month to host a US-Russia summit to discuss ending the fighting in Ukraine, but Trump called it off before a date was set.
“Something will begin to take shape, while the Budapest peace summit approaches… This marks an extremely important new step towards the Budapest peace summit,” Orban said on Friday.
Orban — who is facing an election next year expected to be a tight battle — visited his “dear friend” Trump at the White House earlier this month, securing a one-year exemption from sanctions for buying Russian oil and gas.
Trump slapped sanctions on Moscow’s two largest oil companies in October after losing patience with Russian President Vladimir Putin over his refusal to end the Ukraine invasion.
