Israel’s absence from today’s international peace summit in Egypt says it all. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu didn’t even bother to show up — officially blaming a Jewish holiday — while his government now threatens to restart military operations in Gaza, claiming Hamas hasn’t handed over enough corpses.
TPV reports: In reality, it looks like Israel waited until the last hostages were returned so Hamas would lose all leverage. Now, with global cameras focused elsewhere and diplomatic cover secured, the Netanyahu coalition appears poised to resume the assault and finish what it started.
More than 20 nations, including European powers, Arab states, and the U.S., assembled in Sharm el-Sheikh to sign a ceasefire and launch plans for Gaza’s future.
The summit’s goal was to lock in guarantees and mutual commitments — but the absence of Israel as a direct signatory makes any deal intrinsically shaky.
During the signing event, U.S. President Donald Trump joined Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Turkish President Erdoğan, and Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, along with assorted leaders from Europe and the region.

Trump declared that the document “will spell out rules and regulations … and lots of other things,” insisting the framework will “hold up.”
But notably, no Israeli representatives physically attended or signed anything at the ceremony.
Netanyahu’s government has expressed gratitude for the invitation and praised Trump’s efforts, but officially refused in the name of religious conflict with the schedule.
Analysts noted that behind the holiday excuse lies deeper diplomatic and legal entanglements — including possible arrest warrants and domestic political backlash. Turkish President Erdoğan even threatened not to attend if Netanyahu were present, making the Israeli absence diplomatically volatile.
Already Tensions: Corpses, Accusations, Threats
Shortly after the summit, Israel accused Hamas of breaching the deal: Hamas is handing over only four bodies of deceased hostages out of the 28 Israelis known to have died—far short of expectations.
The Israeli government publicly expressed shock and dismay at the discrepancy, suggesting the bargain is already being violated.
Given that Israel has not formally committed to the treaty in person, it retains flexibility to claim technical violations as justification for resuming military operations. In fact, reports suggest that Israeli ministers had already approved preliminary frameworks for the ceasefire, but internal divisions remained over enforcement and timing.
Israel’s absence from the summit, coupled with immediate accusations over incomplete compliance, signals that it never intended to be locked in by the terms. The power imbalance, the internal ideological drives, and deep structural distrust make a durable peace improbable under current conditions.
