US Secretary of State Rubio met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Monday morning to cement the countries’ close alliance.
They met as the Arab-Islamic summit of regional leaders gathered in Doha to denounce Israel’s unprecedented attack on Qatar last week
Al Jazeera reports: Netanyahu claimed there is “immense hypocrisy” among those who criticised Israel over the strike on Qatar, even though US President Donald Trump was one of them. He again said Israel will hit Hamas “wherever they are”.
Rubio leaned heavily into the Israeli narrative on the war, saying, “Hamas needs to cease to exist as an armed element that can threaten peace and security in the region.”
The top US diplomat said “we are focused on what happens next” when asked about Israel’s strike in Doha.
The show of unity comes a day after Rubio and Netanyahu visited the Western Wall along with US envoy Mike Huckabee and praised strong bilateral relations.
During a joint press conference, Netanyahu also vowed to “finish the job” against Iran with the support of US President Donald Trump.
He said: “over the last 16 months, Israel has dealt a mighty blow to Iran’s terror axis. Under the strong leadership of President Trump… I have no doubt that we can and will finish the job”
Rubio said that there “could never be a nuclear Iran” claiming that they are “behind everything that threatens peace’:
Rubio added “It’s important to constantly point that whether we talk about Hamas or we talk about Hezbollah, we talk about violence in the West Bank, or we talk about destabilization in Syria, or we talk about any of these issues the militias in Iraq, they all have behind them one common theme – Iran”
“That must be addressed,” he added.
“A Shia Iran is a threat to the Jewish state, our presence in Middle East and the gulf kingdoms” he said.
