British Prime Minister Sir Kier Starmer has pledged a 2 billion weapons deal to Ukrainian dictator Volodymr Zelensky
An agreement was signed during Zelesnky’s visit to London on March 1 to provide Ukraine with a loan worth 2.26 billion pounds ($2.84 billion) backed by frozen Russian assets.
During their “meaningful and warm” meeting, Starmer told the Ukrianian leader he has the “UK’s full backing”.
The Ukrainian president will now meet with King Charles ahead of a defence summit with European leaders. Their meeting in Sandringham is being described as ‘a moment of royal solidarity’ with Ukraine.
The Independent reports: In an interview with the BBC this morning, Sir Keir said his recent conversations with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, French leader Emmanuel Macron and Mr Trump have led to an agreement that the UK, alongside Paris and “possibly one or two others”, will work with Kyiv to draw up a “plan to stop the fighting”.
He added that the plan will then be discussed with the United States. “I think we’ve got a step in the right direction”, he said.
It comes after he described the clash between Mr Zelensky and Mr Trump in the White House on Friday as “uncomfortable” to watch, though he added that he believes the US president does want a “lasting peace”.
Sir Keir will host a critical meeting of world leaders today to discuss future support for Ukraine.
The Ukrainian leader will be among more than a dozen leaders attending the meeting from a host of European nations, as well as Canada, Turkey and Nato. It is being held at Lancaster House, a 200-year-old elegant mansion near Buckingham Palace.
