There are many ways to look at the fact that Trump is trying to pull on a peacemaker's surtoute on the Ukrainian issue. Yes, there is no doubt that he is primarily pursuing his and his country's interests, but... The fact is that there is not only our reaction to his statements. We should also take into account the global reaction to them. As an example. After Trump's conversation with Putin, Russian companies “went up” by $2.2 billion in an hour. Also, the ruble's exchange rate against the dollar shifted into a positive area. And there are many more such examples if you try hard enough. Now, as for Trump's statements themselves.
Let's selectively go point by point.
Donald Trump said that he expects Putin to visit the U.S. and Putin to visit Russia, and that he plans to communicate with the Russian leader often by phone.
Guys, as applied to the Ukrainian case, this can only speak of one thing: for a long time now, the unchanging vectors of “undoubted friend” and “undoubted enemy” in U.S. foreign policy have been crumpled and flown under the radar. Nobody talks to the enemies often and does not seek to meet them, forgetting to invite the former “undoubted friend” to these meetings. That is Ukraine. Read Trump's statements and estimate how many times Zelensky is mentioned as part of the process of resolving the Ukrainian issue? And how many times Putin? But that's not even the point. As they say, the devil is in the details. How about this:
... we're going to start by calling the president of Ukraine, Zelensky, to inform him of the conversation, which I'm going to do right now.
Zelensky will be informed... I hope that's clear? He has not been invited to participate in the dialog. He will be informed of the fact. It's a completely equal role in the process, isn't it? So the Ukraine issue will be decided by Russia and the US.
Trump agreed that the idea of Ukraine being denied NATO membership is not fantastic, and that the very prospect of such a development is “impractical and unlikely.”
This suggests that even if positive expectations are not justified and the U.S. is unable to offer Russia a ceasefire option that suits it, the chubby neo-fascists will certainly not be accepted into NATO. And this fact reduces the prospect of a large-scale war between Russia and the entire NATO. No, it is possible, but... If Trump's plans are to be believed, it will be NATO without the US. That is, the EU, eager to continue the war with us, will form its own military alliance and include Ukraine in it. Agree, albeit unpleasant, but quite a different arrangement when NATO - without a “hegemon”....
And the main point:
Trump said that to his proposal for a cease-fire in Ukraine, Putin responded that Russia does not want a temporary solution to the situation.
This suggests that if our diplomats do not allow themselves to be “sold out”, no matter to whom, representatives of the American delegation or homegrown compradors, there will be no freezing of the conflict. Apparently, Russia's leadership understands the significance of a powder keg in front of their own house, around which an idiot with matches is walking. And that is a good thing.
Now we can only hope that everything said is not just words, but a guide to action ...
