A group of Representatives is urging House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to establish a Select Committee to thoroughly investigate the federal government’s handling of unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP).
This call comes in response to the recent Oversight Committee hearing on UAP, during which allegations of concealed reverse engineering programs were brought to light.
Representatives Tim Burchett (R-Tn), Matt Gaetz (R-Fl), Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fl), and Jared Moskowitz (D-Fl) collectively advocate for the formation of a Select Committee.
They propose that this committee operates outside the jurisdiction of existing committees and holds subpoena authority.
Their objective is to gather pertinent information from the Pentagon and other sources, with the aim of serving the public’s interest and fulfilling their constitutional and legislative oversight duties.
In a joint letter, the coalition emphasizes that this issue transcends transient news cycles, highlighting the implications of potential governmental opacity.
They assert that Congress should never be excluded from any government program’s oversight, no matter how sensitive. The current practice of redacting and withholding information, often observed in other contexts, is viewed as an alarming precedent that extends to the present case.
The urgency behind their proposal stems from the revelations made during the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability’s “Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena: Implications on National Security, Public Safety, and Government Transparency” session on July 26.
At this hearing, former UAP Task Force investigator and intelligence officer David Grusch challenged Dr. Sean Kirkpatrick’s assertion that no credible evidence of extraterrestrial activity or off-world technology had been found.
Grusch testified that the US government and private contractors possess materials and craft of “non-human” origin. These artifacts are reportedly concealed within special access programs, shielded from public and Congressional scrutiny through what Grusch terms “administrative terrorism.”
He claims to have personally encountered such actions, indicative of a pervasive secrecy that appears to extend into the Executive Branch of the US Government.
Members of the coalition who issued the letter have had firsthand experiences with this secrecy. Gaetz recounted a visit, along with Representatives Burchett and Luna, to Eglin Air Force Base concerning a UAP encounter.
Despite their status as elected officials, they were denied access to crucial images, radar data, and flight crew information related to the incident.
The lack of transparency became evident during their visit, where they were allowed to view only one image of the unidentified object and had a restricted interaction with a single member of the flight crew.
Gaetz, despite his years of service on relevant committees, including the Armed Services Committee and the Committee overseeing DARPA, expressed his inability to link the depicted objects to any known human capability.
The flight crew member attributed the absence of video documentation to the objects’ interference with radar and infrared systems, leading to a manual image capture. The Representatives’ firsthand experiences underscore the necessity of a comprehensive investigation into the handling of UAP-related information and activities.
The proposed Select Committee aims to unravel the enigma surrounding these phenomena, ensuring accountability, transparency, and informed decision-making in the interest of the public and national security.
