American radio astronomers have discovered strange signs resembling a sequence of luminous dashes and dots near a supermassive black hole in the center of the Milky Way. This discovery was made through the use of the latest technology and instruments.
The first lines that scientists identify with the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy were discovered back in the early 1980s. However, these lines were always perpendicular to the plane of the Milky Way.
In the new discovery, whose results were published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, said about the short lines in the plane of the galaxy near the black hole. Scientists can not yet say what caused these strange “dashes and dots”, but suggest that their age is at least a few million years, and to their occurrence is directly related to the activity of the black hole.
“We’ve always thought about vertical filaments and their origin. But I never thought there could be others, in the plane of the galaxy,” said radio astronomer Farhad Yousef-Zadeh.
This discovery could help scientists better understand the origin of black holes and their influence on galaxies. In addition, the discovery could lead to new methods for studying the gravitational waves that occur when black holes merge.
